5 Critical Furnace Parts You Must Clean (Ignoring One Could Shut Down Your Furnace)

1. Condensate Trap & Tubing

This is the most overlooked part of a condensing gas heater.

⚠ FAQ

If the drain pipe is blocked and the condensed water cannot flow out, it willPour it into the furnace, causing the heater to immediately throw an error code and stop operating.

🧼 Must clean method

  • Remove the condensate collector
  • Blow with mouth or vacuum cleaner
  • or soak in hot soapy water Clean thoroughly

One of the most common causes of furnace downtime in the New York winter is clogged drains!

2. Flame Rod / Flame Sensor

A dirty flame sensor is the most common cause of a heater that "flashes out immediately after ignition."

⚠ Why does the furnace shut down?

The flame sensor is responsible for detecting flames. If the surface is covered with oxides and soot, the heater will mistakenly think that the flame does not exist → Automatically turn off gas, flameout and stop.

🧼 Cleaning method

  • Turn off the power to the heater first
  • Remove the flame rod
  • Use Non-oil impregnated steel wool(dry steel wool) clean metal surfaces

This is one of the most critical and economical furnace maintenance items.

3. Air Filter

A clogged air filter will directly cause the heater to overheat and shut down.

⚠ What happens after a blockage?

  • Insufficient airflow → Heat exchanger temperature too high
  • Temperature sensor triggers protection → heater error
  • Long-term blockage will damage the ECM blower motor(High maintenance costs)

🧼 Suggestions

  • Replace filter every 3 months
  • New York’s high dust environment and pet households require more frequent

A clean filter will do more to extend the life of your furnace than any amount of maintenance.

4. Combustion Chamber/Burner Tubes

Combustion problems are among the "major hazard areas" of furnaces.

⚠ Three types of problems that must be dealt with

1. black soot

Indicates incomplete gas combustion, which may result in:

  • Heat exchanger contamination
  • Overall machine failure
  • Increased risk of carbon monoxide (very dangerous!)

2. Corrosion and blockage

Commonly found in outdoor units, it will affect flame transmission and requires thorough cleaning with a wire brush.

3. Spider webs blocking gas pipes

It is particularly common in the Queens/Long Island boroughs of New York.

✔ Suggestions

Must be performed by professional technicians Combustion Analysis Test, determine whether the gas combustion is normal.

5. Small metal pressure port (Inducer Motor Metal Port)

Mainly appears in 80% efficiency heaterin.

⚠ If it is blocked, it will appear:

  • Furnace displays "Pressure switch error"
  • Induced draft fan failed to pass inspection
  • System refuses to ignite

🧼 Cleaning method

  • Remove hose
  • Use tools to clear metal joints
  • Remove all corrosion
  • Just reconnect the hose

This is a common reason why your furnace won't start.
